Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery Rules & Regulations

Here at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery, we pride ourselves in providing a beautifully kept and well-maintained park-like setting for the reverent memorialization of your loved ones. Great lengths are taken  and planned carefully to the landscaping and design of our grounds.

With our lot owners in mind, Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery maintains strict policies regarding the flowers, trees and general landscaping to protect the dignity and beauty of our cemetery.

WE WELCOME:

• Fresh flowers placed on a grave or in a shatter resistant vase and or potted plants
• Wreaths, baskets, and small evergreen trees (potted) during the winter holidays (mostly made of natural materials).
• Window Boxes

The following are NOT ALLOWED and are STRICTLY ENFORCED:

Cemetery Grounds and Lawn Crypt Garden

• Planting at graves
• Artificial and silk flowers
• Vigil lights
• Candles
• Statues or ornaments
• Toys
• Paving materials
• Fencing
• Glass Containers
• Balloons
• Any items attached to monuments
• Draped or suspended items including religious items
• Embellishments of any kind
• Bicycling
• Picnics
• Jogging
• Dog walking

Community Mausoleum Buildings (Interior)

• Artificial/Silk flowers and wreaths
• Potted Plants
• Balloons
• Vigil Lights
• Photos
• Embellishments of any kind
• Embellishments fastened to crypt or niche fronts
• Window Boxes are not to exceed 16”x10”

Hours of Interior Visitation: 9:00 A.M. – 4:00 P.M.

Doors locked promptly at 4:00 P.M. Daily and Weekends

Community Mausoleum Buildings (Exterior)

• Artificial/Silk flowers and wreaths
• Balloons
• Vigil Lights
• Glass Containers
• Photos
• Embellishments of any kind
• Embellishments fastened to crypt or niche fronts
• Window Boxes are not to exceed 16”x10”

Garden Gazebo Columbarium

• No plants, flowers (fresh or artificial) are allowed inside the Garden Gazebo Columbarium
• No items of any kind are to be placed on top of the niche walls or at niche bank of statue

For your convenience a vase stand is provided on the south side of the Columbarium for fresh flower bouquets. Vases will be provided by the cemetery office.

REMOVAL POLICIES

Holidays

• Fresh flowers, sprays and potted flowers and plants brought by visitors may remain at a burial site up to 10 days after a holiday as longs as freshness is maintained.

Year Round

• All flowers and plants that no longer provide beauty will be removed by the cemetery staff at their discretion.
• Prohibited items will be removed immediately and without notice.

CHRISTMASTIME

Any holiday items wanted are to be removed by January 15^th.

Easter, Father and Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day

Items will be cleared away 10 days after the holiday.

MEMORIAL DAY

Volunteers graciously gather yearly and walk through every section here at the cemetery, looking for veteran designations and will place flags at the Veteran graves.

If a Veteran is missed, we will gladly place them on the list to receive a flag for the following year. Please note the Cemetery office always has flags at the office for your convenience.

IN SEPTEMBER fall clean up occurs and all items are removed including flags due to leaf removal.

AT ANY TIME… it is not advised to leave any item(s) of sentimental or monetary value. Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery will not be held liable for any lost or stolen items.

STRICTLY PROHIBITED:

No hole digging, flower picking, trimming or damage of any tree, shrub, flower or plant.
